If you're new to babies and baby clothes, the amount of choice can be confusing, and there are some things to consider that you might not have thought of that could be important. Here are a few tips to consider when buying clothes as a gift or for your own children.
Newborn babies
Newborns spend most of their time on their backs, and will do until they are 3-6 months old, so any bows, buttons or bulky decoration on the back of an item will be quite uncomfortable.
An average sized newborn baby (between 7 & 8lbs) will only fit into newborn sized clothes for a very very short time, perhaps only a week or so. Larger birthweight babies may be born too large for this size. If in doubt, go for 0-3 months.
New parents often receive lots of baby clothing gifts in newborn or 0-3 month old size, so you may want to go for a larger size for your gift - something for the baby to grow in to later. If you do this though, remember to consider what season it will be when the baby grows in to your gift!
Older babies
Most babies learn to crawl between 6 and 12 months of age. Dresses can make crawling more difficult for baby girls - they just get in the way!
Toddlers
Toddlers just love to run, climb and explore their worlds. Comfortable, easy clothes are best at this age - soft trousers or leggings and tops that give them freedom of movement.
Later, when potty training, ease of access is very important! At this age, fiddly clothes such as dungarees, baby vests with poppers, or even trousers with buttons are best avoided.
